Shillong, June 20 , 2023: In line with the Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat

programme of the Government of India, which aims to enhance

interaction & promote mutual understanding between people of different

states/UTs, the Foundation Day of West Bengal was today celebrated at

Raj Bhavan Shillong.

To mark the occasion a cultural evening was organized wherein

the Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya, Shri Phagu Chauhan graced the

occasion as the Chief Guest.

Addressing the occasion, the Hon'ble Governor emphasized the

historical significance of Bengal and its journey as a torchbearer of

renaissance, socio-cultural awakening, and nationalistic development,

despite enduring oppressive conditions during British rule. Reflecting on

the tapestry of Bengal's history, the Governor highlighted how West

Bengal, despite enduring the painful consequences of religious divisions,

emerged as an integral part of India. The state has produced exceptional

personalities such as Raja Ram Mohan Roy, Sri Aurobindo, Bankim

Chandra Chattopadhyay, Rabindranath Tagore, Netaji Subhas Chandra

Bose, and numerous others who have left an indelible mark on the

nation's history with their remarkable achievements.

The cultural evening showcased a splendid array of performances,

including a Rabindra Sangeet performance by Smti Sutapa Chowdhary,

a dance performance by Smti Devi Dhar and her troupe, a song by Shri

Dhananjay, and an enthralling performance by Shobdoghor Guwahati.

Furthermore, in anticipation of the upcoming International Yoga

Day celebrations on June 21, a special Yoga Asana session was also

conducted today.

The programme was organized by Indian Council for Cultural

Relations (ICCR) Shillong in collaboration with the Department of Arts

and Culture, Government of Meghalaya.
