National Science Day observed at USTM


 Commemorating the discovery of the 'Raman Effect' on

February 28, 1928 by Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman, the great Indian physicist, the

National Science Day was celebrated today at the University of Science and Technology

Meghalaya with the theme “Integrated Approach in Science and Technology for a Sustainable

Future.” The event was jointly organised by USTM and the Regional Institute of Science

&Technology. On this occasion, debate, poster and extempore speech competitions related to

this year’s theme were held among the students.

Addressing the participants of the programme as the Chief Guest, Prof. GD Sharma, Vice

Chancellor of the USTM said that Sir CV Raman made an important discovery in the field of

spectroscopy which was later named after him, the Raman Effect and he was awarded the

prestigious Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930 for this discovery. Dr B.K. Das, Director

Administration said that science should always be used as a blessing and not as a curse. In his

speech, Dr R. K. Sharma outlined the contributions made by CV Raman in the field of science

and technology.

Various competitions were held amongst the students including debate competition, poster

making competition, and extempore speech competition. The Vice-Chancellor distributed the

prizes and certificates amongst the winners of the competitions. Earlier, the welcome address

was forwarded by Dr P K Pathak, principal of RIST while the vote of thanks was extended by

Karzan Basumatari of CSC, USTM.
